Dr Bhakti Yadav A Doctor Who Gave Free Treatment To All Since 1948



 Dr Bhakti Yadav was better known as ‘Doctor Dadi’. She was a synonym for Selflessness. Dr Yadav 91, was the first female MBBS from Indore, India. During her entire career, she worked only to help needy people. She never used her skills and degree for money. She treated over 1 lakh patients free of cost especially women from the weaker sections. She was widely popular for being generous and offering free treatment to poor patients since 1948. She was an eminent gynaecologist. Her inspiring spirit to serve patients till her last breath was laudable. In the 68 years of her career, Dr. Bhakti Yadav helped deliver thousands of babies, without taking any fees from her patients. She was awarded one of India’s highest civilian honors, Padma Shri.

Dr Bhakti Yadav was born on 3 April 1926 in Ujjain in Mahidpur. She belonged to a reputed Maharashtrian family. In 1937 when few girls studied, she had a dream for higher studies. Her father sent her to a nearby village school where she studied till the seventh class. Thereafter her father got her admitted in Ahilya Ashram School, the only girls’ school in Indore in that time. The school also had boarding facilities. After class 11th, she joined Hollkar Science College, Indore for BSc. She was the topper in the college in the first year. She did her MBBS from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM) where she got admitted based on her excellent results of 11th standard. Among 40 MBBS students, she was the only girl. Dr Bhakti Yadav happened to be the first female student of the first batch of MGM Medical College’s MBBS students. After her graduation, she also became the first MBBS doctor from central India. She also completed her MS from MGM Medical College.

Early in her career, she refused creamy job in government hospital and instead joined Nandlal Bhandari Maternity Home for wives of poor cloth mill workers. She ran the maternity home for several decades, before starting her own nursing home, Vatsalya, in Pardeshipura area.

In 68 years of her career as a gynaecologist, she delivered thousands of babies, without charging any fees from patients reaching her from far off places of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Her Patients had tremendous faith in her. Many women from Gujarat and Rajasthan came to her for normal delivery. Her spirit to serve patients was highly inspiring. Her last wish was to keep serving people until she was alive. Dr Bhakti Yadav was awarded ‘Padma Shri’ for her service to the society and nation. She is a role model for all who. consider medical profession a means of serving the humanity.
